Panthers: Tre Boston’s faith in Matt Rhule is a positive sign
By Dean Jones
New Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule has received some glowing praise from his star safety Tre Boston.
Tre Boston is clearly a fan of what new head coach Matt Rhule can bring to the Carolina Panthers. The standout safety was in the minority this offseason when he was offered an extension. And the player has been impressed by what he has seen from the former Baylor man so far.
This is a complete shift in ideals from the Carolina Panthers. Rhule has an outstanding resume when it comes to building up struggling college programs. And the franchise has bet big that he can keep this trend going in the pros.
Although the roster has yet to hold a face-to-face meeting due to the current climate. It is evident that Rhule’s actions both in virtual meetings and in other areas have installed tremendous confidence that he can get things turned around quickly.
Boston was arguably the Panthers’ brightest defensive performer in 2019. And he will need to be at his very best to guide a young core through their expected period of transition.
Speaking to NFL Network insider Ian Rappaport, Boston stated that Rhule has the “it” factor when it comes to leading. And he has already secured the trust of his players in a short space of time.
"“I think this guy has an edge to him. I think he has a certain ‘it’ that coaches have to have. I’m excited to see him more in person with the guys, because right now, I think he started with a nice lead because he has a nice momentum going in between how he’s treated us, how he’s respected us, how he respects our time. That means a lot to professionals and men, adults, as well. So, I think Rhule has set himself up for success with his men. We trust him. We believe in him. And when we get together, it’s all about building chemistry and knowing that we are the Carolina Panthers and we’re gonna do what it takes to win ballgames around here.”"
Talk is cheap in the NFL. But for Boston to say these things about his head coach speaks volumes for the way Rhule has adjusted in the most difficult of circumstances. He admitted in a recent interview with Around the NFL that he’d only met around 20 of the 90-man roster currently. So it is vital that he makes every moment count during training camp.
Boston’s faith in Rhule bodes well for the Carolina Panthers
Expectations might be low for the Carolina Panthers heading into 2020. But that does not mean the organization couldn’t pull off its fair share of upsets along the way next season.
There is little doubting the talent that lies within the group. They might be a little raw going in. But if the roster can show a willingness to overcome adversity together and develop as the campaign goes on. It is going to stand them in good stead on their way to becoming a possible contender in the future.
The fact a veteran like Boston has gone public with his unconditional support of Rhule is telling. And this will undoubtedly spread throughout the roster before week one.
It’s not hard to see why Boston likes his new head coach so much. He is incredibly driven, knows what it takes to succeed, and has shown certain members of the Panthers’ roster significant support regarding their desire to join protests across the country.
These are exciting times in Carolina. The team has ambitious plans off the field and a young roster capable of great things going forward if they rise to the challenge.
Rhule’s start to his time in the role has clearly commanded respect. And hopefully, this is something that translates to on-field production in 2020 and beyond.
