Carolina Panthers: Which 4 teams are favored to land Cam Newton?
By Dean Jones
2. Washington Redskins (7/1)
Despite the Washington Redskins’ desire to move forward with their 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins. The rumors surrounding a reunion between Cam Newton and former head coach Ron Rivera are not going away.
The pair enjoyed a phenomenal amount of success together with the Carolina Panthers. And Newton represents an upgrade on current No. 2 option and ex-Panther Kyle Allen, who was acquired in a trade this offseason.
This move is another that makes so much sense from Washington’s perspective. Rivera will know more about the player than any other head coach. So Newton could slot in at the drop of a hat given his familiarity with the system.
Haskins has a big year ahead of him following an underwhelming rookie campaign. There is plenty of pressure on him to produce. But this new regime has no emotional ties to the player and will not hesitate to look elsewhere if things do not pan out as expected.
All Newton is probably looking for at the present time is somewhere when he can come in and give the coaching staff something to think about regarding their starting position. This is something that could definitely be attributed to a move to Washington. But whether Rivera wants to work with the player once again is another matter entirely.
There is also the Redskins’ situation regarding Alex Smith to consider. The former No. 1 pick suffered a severe injury that almost cost him his leg. But he has not yet given up hope of making a return.
