2. Marty Hurney’s relationship with Matt Rhule

Another reason why Marty Hurney might be getting an extension from the Carolina Panthers is his blossoming relationship with Matt Rhule. The organization has bet big that the former Baylor man can lead the team back to prominence. And it is vital he is given every chance to make this dream a reality.

Hurney and Rhule have been very complimentary about each other during their first few months working together. Despite their lack of face-to-face time together in the current climate. They have found a way to make things work despite the difficulties.

If David Tepper decides not to extend Hurney, it could have significant repercussions on the Panthers’ chances. The last thing Rhule will want is for another GM to come in with different ideas to his own. And Carolina needs to take this into consideration when looking at a longer-term deal for the GM.

Rhule is on a seven-year deal with the franchise. This is what it took to get him out of the college system. And it appears from the outside looking in as if he and Hurney get on extremely well.

This will stand the Panthers in good stead going forward. But as is the case with most things in the NFL. Things will ultimately be judged on their fortunes on the field during their initial period of transition.
