3. Seeing through the rebuild

This has been a period of great change for the Carolina Panthers. Marty Hurney seems to be the only guy left from decision-makers that have departed the organization. And given what he has dedicated to the team for almost two decades. One could argue he deserves to see this period through.

Going through a rebuild is never easy. Tough decisions need to be made for the greater good. And although Hurney and the Panthers might have handled some situations better in recent months. The team’s outlook looks far better than the one that ended the season so poorly in 2019.

The last two seasons have been nothing to shout about. But if Cam Newton hadn’t got hurt in 2018, then this might be a completely different scenario awaiting Carolina. Instead, they are now in the process that might take some time. And any change at the very top of the decision-making pyramid has the potential to cause more harm than good.

Hurney has been through it all with the Panthers during his time with the organization. He has molded some fantastic rosters. But this has also come with plenty of teams who failed to deliver on their promise.

Expectations surrounding this current group are pretty low going into 2020. This gives Rhule and Hurney a free pass. And it appears unlikely that another GM would relish the prospect of coming in midway through this crucial period of transition.
