Carolina Panthers get lowly place in Touchdown Wire power ranking
By Dean Jones
Things look bleak for the Carolina Panthers in 2020 if the Touchdown Wire’s latest power rankings are any indication.
The Carolina Panthers are not expected to set the world alight in 2020. They are in the midst of a rebuild and it is going to take time for things to come together for a new roster and coaching staff.
Head coach Matt Rhule will be given some leeway in his pursuit of making the Carolina Panthers a contender once again. He has built up a strong reputation at Baylor and Temple in regards to turning things around. But this was a gradual process and did not happen overnight.
Another complication the Panthers have to overcome next season is their schedule, which appears to be extremely tough. The NFC South has two teams that could realistically expect to be competing for a Super Bowl. And Carolina also has to contend with a large number of teams who will be aiming for a postseason berth.
Doug Farrar of The Touchdown Wire also doesn’t hold out much hope of the Panthers surprising people in 2020. In his latest power ranking, he put Carolina at No. 28 on the list and highlighted the vast changes as the main reason behind their lowly place in the standings.
"“Change has come to the Panthers, as both the quarterback and head coach that captained the team since 2011 — Cam Newton and Ron Rivera — were both cashiered. Now, it’s up to Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Rhule to bring the franchise back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Bridgewater is capable of doing that when he’s healthy, and Christian McCaffrey may be the most valuable running back in the NFL. First-round defensive tackle Derrick Brown will help what was the league’s worst run defense last season, but the Panthers are not quite where they need to be overall to compete in what will be a brutally competitive NFC South just yet.”"
Only the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, and Washington Redskins were ranked lower than the Panthers. And this is further evidence of the size of the task awaiting each member of the organization in the coming months.
Could the Carolina Panthers rank higher than No. 28 this season?
With so much uncertainty regarding the Carolina Panthers heading into the campaign. Writers across the country are airing on the side of caution when it comes to their chances. This is somewhat expected with a young and relatively unproven roster. But all this could change if things click right away.

Carolina’s front office has assembled some game-changing players on both sides of the ball. And although a reduced offseason together is going to hamper them in the short-term. Learning as they go and developing with every passing game is going to be more essential that anything in the win column during this specific period. And any positive signs that come their way can give them great encouragement ahead of another crucial free agency period in 2021.
However, if the Panthers can come together and totally buy into the coaching staff’s ethos and belief. Then it should come with improved performances on the field.
Expecting miracles from this particular group is not going to anybody any favors. But things could look a lot rosier next spring with more financial resources available to possibly attract big-name free agents to the franchise.
Predictions come with the territory at this stage of the NFL offseason. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that things might get worse for the Panthers before they get better.
