Why the Carolina Panthers will struggle: Cornerback concerns

Another area of the field that comes with some concern going into the season is the cornerback spot. The Carolina Panthers lost their No. 1 option, James Bradberry, to the New York Giants in free agency. And the likes of Ross Cockrell and Javien Elliott are no longer with the franchise.

This put the team’s hopes squarely on the shoulders of Donte Jackson. There is plenty of hope that the former second-round pick can take another leap forward with more responsibility on his shoulders. But this is going to come covering the opposition’s No. 1 receiving option on a more consistent basis.

Lining up alongside Jackson will be free-agent signing Eli Apple. It’s easy to forget he was once the tenth overall selection. But he has failed to live up to expectations so far and this looks like being his final chance of making a go of things from a starting perspective in the NFL.

The Panthers did draft Troy Pride Jr. with their fourth-rounder. And although he has elite speed and a good skill set to work with. Putting too much on the former Notre Dame standout right away could have an adverse effect on his long-term prospects.

Given the strength of passing attacking that Carolina will come up against next season. This unit will need to come together in a short space of time. If they don’t, then they could end up being a weak link on the roster.
