Carolina Panthers strongest positions (No. 2): Defensive end

– Stephen Weatherly, Brian Burns, Yetur Gross-Matos, Efe Obada, Chris Smith, Marquis Haynes, Christian Miller

Although the likes of Mario Addison and Bruce Irvin were moved on this spring. The defensive end position for the Carolina Panthers looks stronger than it has for some time.

They are expecting big things from their 2019 first-round pick Brian Burns with more time on the field. This comes after an encouraging rookie campaign that saw him secure 7.5 sacks in a rotational role.

There is also set to be far room to work in going forward. So the sky is the limit for Burns if he continues to develop his craft.

The Panthers also brought in free-agent signing Stephen Weatherly from the Minnesota Vikings, who will now get the chance to make a real go of things from a starting position after impressing for Mike Zimmer’s men in a rotational role.

Another welcome boost for the unit is the arrival of former Penn State standout Yetur Gross Matos. The edge rusher fell into Carolina’s lap at No. 38 overall and is an intriguing prospect that has a very high ceiling coming into the NFL.

Players such as Marquis Haynes, Efe Obada, and Christian Miller could also make a difference. But it is vital they make the most out of their opportunities on the field in order to prove their worth to the Panthers long-term.

Chris Smith is another that has some skills to work with. But it could be a stretch for him to make the 53-man roster given the strength in depth.
