Carolina Panthers 2007 Draft: Brent Celek over Dante Rosario (No. 155)
The back end of the 2007 NFL Draft is not nearly as good as others throughout history. It still had some hidden gems. But overall it was full of promising players that never got close to reaching their ceiling.
Brent Celek was very productive for the Philadelphia Eagles. He never made a Pro Bowl despite coming up with the goods in critical situations time and time again. But he was the complete package as a tight end.
Celek had great hands and was a big and strong presence on the line of scrimmage. So he was a great blocker in the run game in addition to his supreme pass-catching skills.
His best season was in 2000 where he caught 76 passes for 971 yards and eight touchdowns. Celek was a big part of the Eagles’ success in the early 2010s. And he can look back on his career with an enormous sense of pride.
The Carolina Panthers picked Dante Rosario who also played tight end. But he didn’t have nearly the same amount of success as Celek.
Swapping players in hindsight would have given the Panthers a sure-handed tight end for many years. They eventually got a prolific presence in Greg Olsen. But having Olsen and Celek together on the same team might have been the best tandem in the NFL.
