Carolina Panthers Player No. 3: Jermaine Carter (OLB)
Opportunity knocks for Jermaine Carter with the Carolina Panthers in 2020. The former fifth-round pick out of Maryland has been used as a bit-part player during his career so far. But the departures of Mario Addison, Bruce Irvin, and Vernon Butler have left the organization needing someone to slot in opposite Shaq Thomspon at outside linebacker.
Depending on where the coaching staff utilizes second-round selection Yeutr Gross-Matos. The starting position should be Carter’s to lose providing he shows what he is capable of during training camp.
There is a lot to like about the sort of tools that Carter brings to the table. He has tremendous instincts. And the player possesses a real nous for being around the ball.
Carter will need to refine his pass-rushing skills in order to make a real go of this opportunity. But there is nothing to suggest he cannot make a notable contribution to a front seven that looks to be an area of significant strength going into the season.
There should be plenty of space for Carter to work in thanks to the presence of some outstanding playmakers around him. He will be a relatively unknown quantity to opposing offenses. And this is something that could work to his advantage.
