ESPN analyst calls for Buffalo Bills to sign Cam Newton
By Dean Jones
ESPN analyst Damien Woody has called on the Buffalo Bills to take a chance on former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is still looking for a new home after he was released by the franchise more than two months ago. With social distancing measures being lifted at NFL team facilities, things should start to speed up soon regarding a potential destination.
There is nothing to suggest that Newton is not more than capable of making the most out of another chance somewhere else. The 2015 NFL MVP had serious shoulder and foot problems over his last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers. But he was playing at a high level in 2018 prior to missing time.
Speculation has been rife about what team Newton is going to end up on. Outside of premier pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the signal-caller is the biggest name remaining on the free-agent market. And one ESPN analyst has called for the Buffalo Bills to step up and acquire the player.
Speaking on Get Up! former NFL offensive lineman Damien Woody claimed that Newton would be the perfect backup to Josh Allen in 2020. And should the Bills’ No. 1 option underperform and miss time, he could come in and bring the same sort of traits to Buffalo’s offense.
"“We know the starting quarterback positions have dried up, so if you’re looking for a quarterback that’s possibly in the same mold as Josh Allen, why not pick up a Cam Newton and see what happens?”"
How would former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton fit on the Buffalo Bills?
The Buffalo Bills hold out real hope that they can finally wrestle the AFC East crown from the New England Patriots in 2020. They have made some bold moves that include signing Mario Addison and Vernon Butler from the Carolina Panthers to bolster their defense. And their offensive weapons received a welcome addition in the form of Stefon Diggs thanks to a bombshell trade with the Minnesota Vikings.
Josh Allen is also expected to take another leap forward after showing signs of promise last season. The Bills don’t have much in the way of depth behind him. And Cam Newton would represent a considerable upgrade over Matt Barkley.
Both Newton and Allen can make plays on the run. And they also have similar arm strength when at full health. One would expect the former No. 1 overall pick out of Auburn to slot in seamlessly to the Bills’ scheme in the event of injury. And it shouldn’t derail their postseason ambitions if such an event occurred.
The Patriots themselves have been heavily linked with Newton during the offseason. But Bill Belichick is a stubborn-minded coach and if he feels they can win with Jarrett Stidham, that is the way they’re going to go.
This represents an opportunity that the Bills and Miami Dolphins cannot pass up. The Patriots have dominated for so long. But with Tom Brady now with the Panthers’ NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It is the biggest chance they have had to shift the tide in quite some time.
Adding Newton would undoubtedly be another useful weapon for the Bills to call upon. And they would be wise not to at least bring him in for a workout and medical evaluation when permitted to do so.
