Carolina Panthers: 3 overhyped rookies heading into 2020
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Player No. 3: Kenny Robinson (S)
Kenny Robinson took an unusual route to the NFL and was taken by the Carolina Panthers in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The safety enjoyed a standout spell in the XFL after his time at West Virginia was cut short. But he will find out quickly that the NFL is a completely different ball game.
There are some that expect Robinson to emerge as a contributor to the Panthers’ defense from day one. This is down in no small part to his experience in a professional environment. However, putting too much on the prospect’s shoulders early on is going to have a detrimental impact on his overall chances of a prolonged career.
Robinson has a useful skillset to work with. But he can be classed as overhyped in terms of his immediate chances of production. While he has the knowhow about what it takes in the pros. The difference between the XFL and NFL is vast. And it might have been more beneficial to stay in college despite his misdemeanor.
One suspects this was the only avenue available to him. Grasping an NFL playbook is much more complicated than anything Robinson had to study in the XFL. And he is definitely going to go through his fair share of complications before eventually getting up to speed.
The player is still a little raw and underdeveloped. So it remains to be seen just how much he will be counted on by Carolina’s coaching staff in 2020.
