Carolina Panthers trade target: Zach Cunningham (LB)

Another position where the Carolina Panthers might be looking to strengthen going forward is at linebacker. The franchise was dealt a serious blow when Luke Kuechly took the tough decision to retire in order to preserve his long-term health. And while this is understandable, it has left a gaping hole at the second level.

There is every chance that Tahir Whitehead can plug the gap in the short-term. But the former Las Vegas Raider is the wrong side of 30 and a contingency plan will need to be put in place to speed up their rebuild.

Zach Cunningham is a standout player at the position and is heading into the final year of his deal. The Houston Texans have shown reluctance to spend big on members of the current roster. So there might be a window of opportunity for the Panthers if they identify the former second-round pick as a player of interest.

Bill O’Brien is not what one would describe as a strong negotiator. And Carolina could have a high-end second or third-round pick that might be enough to tip the scales. That would represent some good value for both parties given Cunningham’s contract situation.

Cunningham has been a tackling machine for the Texans over the last two seasons, racking up 249 combined and 172 solos. He has also managed to attain two sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception, and seven pass deflections to further heighten his overall influence.
