Carolina Panthers Player No. 5: Colin Thompson (TE)

Colin Thomspon might be heading into his final opportunity to make an NFL roster. He has so far been unable to achieve his dream. And if the league makes the proposal to trim down rosters ahead of training camp. He might very well be out of luck once again.

The tight end is another of new head coach Matt Rhule’s former player. And the position is one that is lacking in any real depth behind No. 1 option Ian Thomas. Thompson is coming off some time in the XFL where he was used sparingly. And his realistic chances of making the Carolina Panthers’ 53-man roster appear bleak.

This would make him a prime “trimming” candidate if the NFL decides to go in this particular direction. It would be something if Thompson had any sort of experience at the next level that could benefit him on tape. But the fact of the matter is that the likes of Chris Manhertz, Temarrick Hemingway, and undrafted free-agent Cam Sutton all represent more intriguing options.

The player himself knows full well what to expect during this period of the offseason. Individuals across the country are fighting for an elusive roster spot. And there are only so many places on a team to go around.

Rhule was obviously keen to see what Thompson could bring to the Panthers. But that decision might be taken out of his hands.
