Carolina Panthers Storyline No. 2: Rookie influx

The Carolina Panthers made history by becoming the first NFL team to allocate every draft pick on defense. This was something that might not have been planned. But it was something that was extremely welcome given the lack of defensive depth across the board.

Things have been far from easy for the class of 2020 this offseason thanks to the current climate. And how many of them can hit the ground running from the word go is going to be a top storyline to watch next season.

Some will have more pressure on their shoulders than others. Derrick Brown is a day one starter with Pro Bowl potential. And the stud defensive tackle’s partnership with Kawann Short has the chance to completely transform the Panthers’ dismal run defense.

Gifted pass-rusher Yetur Gross-Matos is another that can make his presence felt early on. But it remains to be seen just how he is going to be used by defensive coordinator Phil Snow during the early stages of his development.

The Panthers moved back into the second round to take safety Jeremy Chinn. And the former Southern Illinois standout has all the athleticism and versatility that is sure to make him a big hit at the next level.

Cornerback Troy Pride Jr. is as quick as they come if a little raw. But the presence of Eli Apple should smooth his short-term transition and take some pressure off him starting right away.

Kenny Robinson had a colorful path to the NFL, Bravvion Roy has some promise at defensive tackle, and Stantley Thomas-Oliver III could be a diamond in the rough after making a successful move from wide receiver to cornerback.
