Carolina Panthers Player No. 1: Seth Roberts (WR)

The Carolina Panthers might have given Seth Roberts a free-agent deal. But it is far from a guarantee he makes the 53-man roster.

This is down in no small part to the number of outstanding weapons at wide receiver in Carolina. They appear loaded at the position heading into training camp. And it is going to mean a player who can produce is likely to miss out.

Roberts comes into the organization having been used sparingly with the Baltimore Ravens lasts season. Their run-first offense was the catalyst behind their incredible rise to prominence. And it left the player on the outside looking in.

The Panthers appear to have their top three wideout options cemented in D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson, and Curtis Samuel. That leaves the likes of Roberts, Keith Kirkwood, Pharoh Cooper, and Brandon Zylstra fighting for targets in pursuit of securing the No. 4 or 5 spots.

Someone is going to miss out, and it would cost Carolina just $600,000 in dead cap money if they end up parting ways with Roberts. Given that their dead cap figure is an eye-popping $41.11 million, the financial implications won’t matter too much when it comes to making this decision.

Roberts does have the talent to surge clear of the pack. But that does not detract from the fact he has plenty to prove and definitely comes into training camp on the bubble.
