Carolina Panthers: 3 staff members who could get head coaching jobs
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers staff member No. 2: Mike Phair (DL coach)
There isn’t much that Mike Phair hasn’t done or seen during his coaching career. The defensive line coach arrives with the Carolina Panthers after two successful campaigns with the Indianapolis Colts. And he will be working with a front seven that has plenty of strength in depth.
Phair might not be the most obvious candidate for a head coaching job in the NFL. But if he can transform Carolina’s defensive front into one of the NFL’s best. Then this possibility would increase considerably.
The new arrival has made it clear in no uncertain terms what he expects from this group. And his primary focus will be utilizing athletic gifts and improving communication.
"“You are going to hear us talk about this a lot, the toughness. A guy that has that gritty mentality. You’ll see quick and athletic guys who can get off the ball and play multiple positions. They’ll be all different shapes and sizes, but we want all of them to have that toughness.”"
This was an area of considerable concern for the Panthers last season. Their run defense was lackluster. And although they did manage to produce a solid overall sack number in 2019. It did not prevent the team from capitulating during games.
Phair boasts 21 years’ experience in a coaching environment. This has seen him work with some outstanding defenses at teams such as the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks. And his player evaluation is another worthy tool to have after a successful scouting spell that spanned six seasons.
Much will depend on whether Phair can work his magic with Carolina’s current group. There is every chance this area of the field becomes the organization’s strongest. And if this proves to be the case, it might propel the defensive live coach into the spotlight.
