Panthers: 5 best draft fits if college football season is canceled

Panthers Player No. 5: Jay Tufele (DT) – USC
Veteran Kawann Short is embarking on what could well be his final season with the Carolina Panthers. The imposing Pro Bowler is set to count a whopping $20.8 million against the cap in 2021. And given the direction that the organization is going in, there doesn’t appear much chance he will be brought back at this financial sum.
The Panthers allocated the No. 7 overall pick on Derrick Brown this year. And they might be able to find some real value on day two of the NFL Draft if the college season is eventually canceled.
One player that might fall into this category if Jay Tufele. The USC defensive tackle was a force to be reckoned with in 2019. And he now had two productive seasons of some quality film under his belt.
Tufele has been adept at getting to the quarterback during his time with the Trojans. He has accumulated 7.5 sacks over two seasons thanks to a supreme burst and nifty footwork for a player his size.
The player would compliment what Brown brings to the table extremely well. The former Auburn standout is a formidable presence in the run game. But some question his ability to get sacks against more talented NFL lineman.
This is something that Tufele should have no trouble with. And no college campaign could see the prospect miss out on pushing to become a first-round selection, which would also work in the Panthers’ favor.
