Panthers reason No. 4: Jeremy Chinn’s potential

The Carolina Panthers didn’t have many picks going into the 2020 NFL Draft. But the opted to sacrifice one to move back into the second round and take standout safety, Jeremy Chinn.

The Southern Illinois product comes to the next level with an exceptional skill set that could see the player make an instant impression from day one. Carolina’s coaching staff will be relishing the prospect of working with such a talent. And defensive coordinator Phil Snow has the option to use Chinn almost anywhere on the back end.

Chinn’s progress during his rookie season is going to be a must-watch. The player himself has already outlined his desire to become “a defensive weapon” rather than be tied to one specific position.

"“I wouldn’t even give myself a position. I think I’m just a defensive weapon. I think I’m just a threat.”"

This attitude has the potential to help the Panthers enormously. Chinn specializes in the safety spot. But he is also physical enough to come down into the second level during running downs or in the nickel as a slot cornerback.

The possibilities are limitless when it comes to Chinn and how he can be utilized in Carolina. Rookie players in the secondary do tend to have their fair share of ups and downs. But any growing pains that the player suffers during the campaign will all be a solid experience to call upon in the years to come.

Chinn will also have the benefit of a veteran with enormous experience in Tre Boston alongside him. And this is something else that is sure to aid his overall development considerably.
