Panthers Option No. 1: P.J. Walker

If the Carolina Panthers have to go in a different direction at some point in 2020, then back up option P.J. Walker might be the man to take up the mantle. The quarterback has a lot of likable skills at his disposal. And it would be a surprise if this wasn’t the first thing that came to the organization’s mind in this scenario.

Walker was arguably the XFL’s best player before the current climate forced the league to disband. He was a dual-threat presence under center and displayed composure in the pocket that really caught the eye.

It didn’t take long for Matt Rhule to get his former college signal-caller to Carolina on a two-year, $1.65 million deal. There is every chance Walker beats out Will Grier to No. 2 on the depth chart. And there is even the possibility that Joe Brady brings him in on special packages as the season progresses.

Walker spent time on and off the Indianapolis Colts with mixed success during the early stages of his career. There appears to be more opportunity with the Panthers if he performs as expected. And it will be interesting to see just how well he adjusts to his new surroundings in the coming weeks.

He is already familiar with his new head coach and the expectations required. This will give him a head start in terms of preparation. But it is vital that Walker makes the very most out of his chance.
