Panthers option No. 2: Colin Kaepernick

There have been renewed calls for Colin Kaepernick to be given another chance to prove himself in the NFL after recent events across the country. This situation between the quarterback and the league might be passed the point of no return. But the Carolina Panthers would be foolish not to at least explore the possibility if Teddy Bridgewater suffers an injury.

Kaepernick certainly looks the part if his workout last year was any indication. The current climate surrounding social injustice is going to have significant implications on the NFL season either way. And having the former San Francisco 49er within the set-up would be further testament to the culture shift that has been undertaken across the organization.

In truth, the desire for Kaepernick to play again might have been and gone. He recently signed a deal with Disney to further enhance his ability to push the cause that got him all-but blackballed from the NFL in the first place.

Getting back on the field is no doubt tempting for the player. But he is three years removed from any meaningful play. And the spotlight would be on the signal-caller in no uncertain terms.

Teams say all the right things regarding a possible move for Kaepernick. But pulling the trigger on a deal is another matter entirely.

The Panthers wouldn’t have a great deal to lose in the event Bridgewater was forced to miss a considerable period of time. But it could end up being a win-win for both parties in the short-term.
