Panthers: 4 options if Teddy Bridgewater misses time through injury
By Dean Jones
Panthers option No. 4: Jacoby Brissett
Another avenue that Carolina Panthers might go down if quarterback Teddy Bridgewater misses substantial time through injury is the trade market. There are plenty of quality backups across the league that would warrant interest. And Jacoby Brissett is someone who could make a real difference.
The player started for the Indianapolis Colts last season after Andrew Luck announced his shock retirement. While he performed adequately, the organization decided to take their chances with veteran Philip Rivers on a one-year, $25 million deal during free agency.
This has left Brissett on the outside looking in despite counting $21.37 million against the Colts’ salary cap in 2020. With the signal-caller entering the final year of his deal. The Panthers might be in with a chance of acquiring the player for a mid-round pick.
The deal would give Indianapolis something in return for Brissett, who might leave for nothing in 2021. He would be an instant upgrade on what Carolina currently has at their disposal. And it would ensure the franchise stays competitive in Bridgewater’s absence.
Brissett completed 60.8 percent of his passes last season. This enabled him to throw for 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He was an efficient distributor on short to intermediate routes. And this could make the player a perfect fit in Joe Brady’s scheme.
The Colts have backed themselves into a corner somewhat by acquiring Rivers. Almost $50 million of their cap is going on two quarterbacks. And something will need to give at some point.
