Carolina Panthers Player No. 1: Eli Apple (CB)

The Carolina Panthers filled a position of need later on in free agency when they agreed to terms on a one-year, $3 million deal with Eli Apple. The cornerback is entering the last chance saloon in his quest to become a notable NFL starter. And this could see the player reach new heights in 2020.

There is a lot to like about the sort of skill set that Apple brings to the table. He has all the athletic tools you look for in a productive corner at the next level. But for whatever reason, the player has failed to make the most of his opportunities so far.

It’s easy to forget that Apple was the No. 10 overall pick once upon a time. The corner found out the hard way what the rigors of the NFL entail during his time with the New York Giants. And he was perceived to be the weak link on the New Orleans Saints in 2019.

This has left his future as a starter hanging in the balance. He will likely fill the role opposite Donte Jackson in week one to allow fourth-rounder Troy Pride Jr. time to develop at his own pace. But if things continue to trend on a downward curve for Apple, it will not take long for the Panthers to remove him from a role of responsibility.

Apple will be all-too-aware of the situation he finds himself in. This will undoubtedly lead to an increased sense of urgency. And the player could end up surprising those who have already written off his chances.
