Carolina Panthers: 4 newcomers who could surprise in 2020
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Player No. 3: Juston Burris (S)
Much will depend on how the Carolina Panthers utilize do-it-all safety Jeremy Chinn during his rookie season as to how much of an impact Juston Burris can make. The player was signed to a two-year, $8 million deal during free agency that included a $2.1 million signing bonus and a further $2.1 million guaranteed. So it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise he is given an opportunity from the outset.
Burris is an experienced figure that has the sort of versatility that become popular with Carolina’s decision-makers during the first few months of their rebuild. He performed well on a poor Cleveland Browns’ defense in 2019 on his way to a 69.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.
The defensive back gave up ten receptions on 14 targets. But Burris did manage to record 26 tackles, two interceptions, two tackles for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble from just nine starts.
This can give the player great encouragement as he looks to make a bigger impression in Carolina. Burris is a big hitter that has the sort of athletic skills to make a significant difference on the back end. And his cause will be aided by the presence of Tre Boston and Chinn, who comes into the NFL with an exceptionally high ceiling.
All signs point to Burris having another productive year either as a starter or on a rotational basis. And this could come with some eating their words this time next year.
