Carolina Panthers Reason No. 1: The 2021 NFL Draft

Barring a complete capitulation from the Carolina Panthers next season. It appears unlikely they will be in a position to select quarterback duo Trevor Lawrence of Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft.

If Teddy Bridgewater doesn’t prove capable of leading the Panthers going forward. Then the decision-makers are going to have to go in a different direction to get their signal-caller of the future.

Dak Prescott wouldn’t be short of offers if the Dallas Cowboys eventually decided to let him test free agency. And if Carolina was fortunate enough to acquire his services. This would give them the option of improving other areas of need with their first-round pick next year.

There is a lot of football to be played between now and then. But the fact of the matter is that things could go either way with the Panthers in 2020. This is a young and relatively unproven roster. So it wouldn’t be a big shock to see them struggle early on before coming together late.

Things really are on that much of a knife-edge regarding their immediate fortunes. Bridgewater does have an out regarding his deal in 2022. But new head coach Matt Rhule will not want any further pressure on his shoulders regarding his quarterback if the former Louisville standout fails to make the most out of the impressive offensive weapons at his disposal.

Taking Lawrence or Fields might be the better move given their talent and age. But there is every likelihood that they will be the first two names called next spring. And it might leave Carolina on the outside looking in.
