By Dean Jones
Here are four bold predictions relating to the Carolina Panthers’ defense in 2020.
The Carolina Panthers have undergone some substantial changes on the defensive side of the ball. Veteran players on large salaries were replaced by young, hungry talent capable of making an instant impression.
It is going to be a stern test for the group to come together in a short space of time during training camp. But if things gel quickly then it is going to do the Panthers’ chances the world of good as the team looks to surprise those who have already written off their chances.
There are plenty of versatile and athletic individuals for defensive coordinator Phil Snow to call upon in 2020. They are sure to be tested significantly by some elite passing attacks on the schedule. And how they respond to adversity is going to tell head coach Matt Rhule a tremendous amount about what sort of players are worth keeping around for the remainder of his rebuild.
Carolina’s outlook might look bleak at the present time. But that does not detract from how many eye-catching players they possess who can make a real difference. Although losing legendary linebacker Luke Kuechly to retirement this offseason is a significant blow. If the unit develops as the campaign progresses, then this will bode well for an expected postseason tilt in 2021.
It promises to be an intriguing campaign for the Panthers across the board. Their offense appears stacked with gifted playmakers. But they will need the defense to hold up its end of the bargain to give them a fighting chance.
