Carolina Panthers rookie No. 4: Troy Pride Jr. (CB)

Troy Pride Jr. was eventually drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. This was somewhat lower than was initially projected. But it did put the former Notre Dame stand out in a good fit in terms of winning a starting job right away.

This opportunity seemed to be quashed almost instantly when the Panthers took the decision to bring in free-agent Eli Apple on a one-year, $3 million deal. Pride Jr. might now have to settle for the nickel role during his rookie campaign. And this is something he can use to spur himself on in the coming weeks during training camp.

While it was necessary for Carolina to bring in additional depth to help their cornerback room. Pride Jr. might see this as something of a slight considering how he prospects looked when the player heard his name called.

He is still a little raw regarding his ability in coverage. So putting too much on Pride Jr.’s shoulders right away against some elite passing attacks on the Panthers’ schedule might have done more harm than good.

It is important that Pride Jr. looks at the bigger picture regarding his rookie contribution. It is rare for a fourth-round selection to secure a starting role initially. So whatever experience he gets in 2020 should do wonders for his overall development.

Pride Jr. has the speed to burn. And if he can harness this into more fluid motion down the field, then there is every chance he can become a successful starter. That being said, the corner will still feel he has something to prove in camp. And this could see him being one of the players who catch the eye.
