Carolina Panthers training camp: 4 players with the most to prove
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Player No. 4: Seth Roberts (WR)
A notable arrival to the Carolina Panthers during free agency was Seth Roberts. The wide receiver spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens. But he found opportunities in a run-first offense limited.
Roberts signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Panthers. But this comes with just $600,000 guaranteed and a $600,000 signing bonus. The team has plenty of options at the wideout spot. So the former undrafted prospect out of West Alabama has plenty to prove if he wants to achieve a prominent role in Joe Brady’s high-octane scheme.
Carolina’s top-three receiver options are cemented. And there will be plenty of players who harbor ambitions of securing the No. 4 position on the depth chart. Roberts has more experience than most candidates heading into camp. And the front office liked the player enough to bring him in this spring.
Roberts provides something a little different. He is a big body who plays the game physically. And this makes him a force to be reckoned with over intermediate routes and in the red zone.
With no preseason game on the schedule, Roberts must show his credential during drills in readiness for the upcoming campaign. Whether he can do this or not is another matter entirely. But the wideout comes into the organization with career stats totaling 179 receptions, 2,097 receiving yards, 15 touchdowns, and a yards per catch average of 11.7.
