Panthers: 4 free agents worth signing with remaining cap space
By Dean Jones
Which free agents could the Carolina Panthers target with their remaining cap space after getting their 2020 NFL Draft class signed?
The Carolina Panthers got the rest of their rookies signed in double-quick fashion ahead of their first taste of the field in an NFL environment. No. 7 overall pick Derrick Brown signed his fully guaranteed deal worth more than $23 million earlier this offseason. But their remaining all-defense class put pen to paper this week.
This will allow each first-year-pro to focus on impressive the Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff in the coming weeks. And if they can do this, it could see the large majority play a prominent role for the franchise in 2020.
According to Spotrac and Over the Cap, the Panthers have a little more than $10 million in cap space remaining following their draft signings. The decision-makers now have some financial wiggle room to bring in one or two free-agent signings to further boost their chances of exceeding their lowly expectations in 2020.
Whether new head coach Matt Rhule will want to adopt a wait and see approach in this area is up for debate. If he doesn’t like what he is seeing from certain individuals during the initial period of training camp, there are plenty of attractive and affordable options remaining in free agency.
Carolina gutted their roster of veteran leadership during a frenzied period of activity. This has left them with an energetic but inexperienced group going forward. So adding some more depth at specific positions wouldn’t be the worst idea before their week one opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Here are four free agents that might be worth considering for the Panthers with their remaining resources.
