Carolina Panthers trade target No. 3: Troy Hill (CB)

Things could go either way with the Carolina Panthers’ cornerback group in 2020. They have a confirmed No. 1 option in Donte Jackson following the departure of James Bradberry. But he is relatively unproven covering the NFL’s best wide receivers on a consistent basis.

Carolina brought in Eli Apple during free agency. And fourth-round pick Troy Pride Jr. has some upside even though he is a little raw coming out of Notre Dame.

It won’t take long for the Panthers to determine whether more will be needed once the season begins. In the case of all three, it is going to be a case of sink or swim. So if they fall into the latter, then one would expect to see some activity either in free agency or the trade market.

Troy Hill represents a player that has shut down potential. What he lacks in stature, he more than makes up for with physicality and fluidity in his movement that is nothing short of exceptional.

The former undrafted player out of Oregon gave up just 23 receptions from 51 targets in 2019 on his way to two interceptions, eight pass deflections, 32 solo tackles, and one tackle for a loss. Hill is heading into the final year of his deal and will make a base salary of $2.85 million in 2020.

If the player continues to trend on an upward curve next season, then a substantial pay rise will be in the offing. This is something the Rams might not be able to do with their salary cap predicament. And this could mean they start taking calls for HIll and ensure the organization gets something in return.
