Carolina Panthers: 3 questions at running back entering camp
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Question No. 2: Is Reggie Bonnafon ready for an increased role?
One of the more eye-catching features on an otherwise disappointing season last time out for the Carolina Panthers was the performance of Reggie Bonnafon. The running back made the most of his limited opportunities. And this could lead the organization to give him more in the way of touches in 2020.
Much will depend on how much the team wants to put on their star player Christian McCaffrey. But Bonnafon is a nice option to have as their No. 2 back if they are looking to reduce the All-Pro’s workload next season and beyond.
Considering it was the player’s first taste of an NFL field in 2019, this only heightens the encouragement regarding his displays. Bonnafon notched an impressive 7.3 yards-per-carry average on his way to a modest 55.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.
Bonnafon did enough to get a one-year, $675,000 contract extension with the franchise. And if he continues to show promising signs next season, then a longer-term commitment might be in the offing in 2021.
Running back is a what have you done for me lately position in the NFL. Bonnafon will need to impress a brand-new coaching staff during training camp in the hope of getting more in the way of minutes on the field. And there is a lot to like about his prospects in Carolina moving forward.
