Carolina Panthers Player No. 3: Stefan LeFors (QB)

To get a measure of just what a disappointment Stefan LeFors actually was. One only has to look at the overall standard of the 2005 NFL Draft. It was immensely poor from top to bottom. And although the Carolina Panthers managed to strike gold with linebacker Thomas Davis, their decision to take the signal-caller in the fourth-round turned out to be a disaster.

LeFors did come into the league with a big reputation after starring for Louisville under Bobby Petrino. And there was no real pressure for the player to come in and make any sort of contribution in the short-term thanks to the presence of Jake Delhomme.

The initial plan was for LeFors to come in as the primary backup and learn from the experienced veteran with a view to replacing him in the future. But to say things didn’t go according to plan would be something of an understatement.

It was clear from watching LeFors during his first preseason that his chances of forging a career in the NFL were slim at best. He failed to beat out Chris Weinke for the No. 2 spot in Carolina behind Delhomme. And the signal-caller never even threw a competitive pass in two years on the team.

Unsuccessful tryouts with the Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders followed before LeFors eventually settled for a stint in the Canadian Football League. He is now passing on this professional experience to the next generation as a high school coach.
