Carolina Panthers training camp: 4 questions facing the offensive line
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Question No. 3: Can John Miller make an instant impact?
Trading away Trai Turner leaves a huge void in terms of interior protection. The five-time Pro Bowler might have had a down year in 2019. But his talent has been there for all to see during his career.
Others will now be tasked with stepping in and contributing immediately to the Carolina Panthers. One player set to get more responsibility than most is John Miller, who was coveted heavily by the front office during free agency before eventually signing a one-year, $4 million deal with a $2 million signing bonus and a further $2 million guaranteed.
Miller projects to fill one of the starting roles at guard, with Dennis Daley and Michael Schofield fighting it out for the other. He has been a solid if not spectacular performer during his career with the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals. So it remains to be seen whether the player can up his game in a different environment.
The former third-round pick out of Louisville is a commanding presence to shift off the block. And Miller has only given up four sacks over his last three seasons. This all points to some encouraging production from the player in Carolina, which would spell good news for both Teddy Bridgewater and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey.
If Miller can showcase his skill set on a consistent basis for the Panthers. It might lead to the organization offering him a longer-term commitment during another crucial offseason period in 2021.
