Carolina Panthers trade target No. 1: Kalen Ballage (RB)

The Carolina Panthers might have the No. 1 running back position sown up with Christian McCaffrey. But they could be in the market for a speedy alternative when the All-Pro needs time away from the field.

Reggie Bonnafon, Mike Davis, and Jordan Scarlett appear to be fighting it out for the No. 2 role during training camp. And there is a real sense of intrigue surrounding undrafted free-agent Rodney Smith following a standout college career with Minnesota.

Another route they could go down for a nice complementary pice is to bring in an additional threat via trade. Kalen Ballage is another dual-threat back who might have found things somewhat difficult in the pros. But there is no denying the sort of athletic traits he brings to the table.

The former fourth-round pick ended the 2019 season on injured reserve. And Ballage is fighting for his share of touches next season after the Miami Dolphins secured the services of Jordan Howard and Matt Breida in his absence.

What comes next for Ballage will ultimately determine what his future in Miami will be. The Panthers might be able to get him at a bargain-basement price if other players on the depth chart don’t impress the new coaching staff at camp.

Ballage has the speed to burn. And he has proven more than capable of making a difference on a three-down basis. There are some durability concerns regarding the player. But this might be a low risk, high reward pickup if Carolina’s current backup options fail to leave their mark.
