Carolina Panthers: 4 weakest projected starters in 2020
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Player No. 3: Jermaine Carter (LB)
There seems to be a window of opportunity for individuals looking to play outside linebacker opposite Shaq Thompson. One could make an argument for two or three members of the Carolina Panthers who might fill this role in 2020. But it is hard to deny that Jermaine Carter is the clear favorite at the present time.
Much will depend on what the coaching staff does with Marquis Haynes, Christian Miller, and Yetur Gross-Matos. All three players look capable of playing the edge rather than as a defensive end. And given the strength of their defensive line. This represents a better opportunity to earn valuable minutes on the field.
Carter has plenty going for him. But he will need to convince a brand-new coaching staff that he is the man for the job. He has been used sparingly by the Panthers during his brief stint in the NFL so far. And bigger things could still be to come with more experience in a competitive setting.
The player earned a modest grade of 54.0 from Pro Football Focus in 2019. And although Carolina’s defense has plenty of positives. Carter might be one of the weaker projected starters given his lack of experience in a critical position.
It could go one of two ways for Carter in 2020. Either the former Maryland star thrives with the extra responsibility, or he wilts under the pressure in a more prominent role.
