Carolina Panthers Player No. 3: Clay Matthews (OLB)

If the Carolina Panthers want to bring in someone with more established starting credentials, then Clay Matthews is the man. The prolific outside linebacker has enjoyed a phenomenal career to date. And although it appears he is now past the peak of his powers. He represents an intriguing option with the ability to come into the organization and contribute right away.

Matthews was arguably the NFL’s best at the position during his time with the Green Bay Packers. He was a constant force around the ball either in run or passing downs. And his vocal motivation at the second level is something that would undoubtedly benefit the Panthers’ young defense an untold amount.

Whether signing someone like Matthews would send out the wrong message to younger members of Carolina’s roster is up for debate. The franchise made a concerted effort to go younger this offseason. So acquiring the All-Pro would go against the grain somewhat.

Matthews is coming off a season with the Los Angeles Rams where he achieved eight sacks, 11 quarterback hits, and nine tackles for loss. This was not enough to earn the six-time Pro Bowl selection a longer stay with the organization. And it seems somewhat peculiar that a player of his standing hasn’t been snapped by another team as yet.

The former USC standout has made plenty of money during his career. It is unlikely that signing Matthews would cost the earth. And the impact he could make on the Panthers is substantial.
