Carolina Panthers training camp: 3 big questions at linebacker
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Question No. 3: Who will fill the second OLB spot?
There appears to be a window of opportunity for players looking to secure the starting position at outside linebacker opposite Shaq Thompson. This looked to be a three-horse race heading into training camp. But with Christian Miller’s decision to opt-out over health concerns. It leaves two young players with significant potential vying for the role.
Jermaine Carter appears to be the slight favorite ahead of a pivotal few weeks at camp. He has been used sparingly during his time with the Carolina Panthers so far. And the jury is still out as to whether he is ready for a more prominent role on defense.
He is a relatively unknown quantity in terms of production. But Carter has plenty of likable athletic traits that should stand him in good stead going forward.
Another individual that will fancy his chances of securing the role is Jordan Kunaszyk. The linebacker could be set for a huge step forward providing he beats out Carter to the role. And his limited action in 2019 was enough to secure an impressive 69.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.
The one wildcard that Carolina has at their disposal is second-round pick Yetur Gross-Matos. The former Penn State edge rusher is versatile enough to stand up on the outside in pass-rushing scenarios. And this is sure to be something that is used by defensive coordinator Phil Snow during the campaign.
