Carolina Panthers No. 1: Defensive tackle ($26.53 million)

The Carolina Panthers are forking out $26.53 million on their defensive tackle depth chart position in 2020. And this has a lot to do with the incredible cap hit that is coming with Kawann Short.

The veteran Pro Bowler is set for a return to full health after missing most of 2019 with a torn rotator cuff. Much is expected of Short on a young defense that is devoid of any real starting experience. And expectations will almost certainly grow thanks to the money he is making.

Short is set to count $19.46 million against Carolina’s cap in 2020. This equates to 9.34 percent of their overall spent currently. And this is going to increase even further when final cuts are made.

This is probably Short’s last campaign with the Panthers unless he restructures. His cap hit will rise to $20.83 million in 2021. And this is simply not financially viable for the organization with money available coming down.

Derrick Brown is a name worth remembering as he enters the NFL. The No. 7 overall pick comes with the highest of ceilings. And his partnership with Short on the interior has the scope to transform their run defense next season.

The former Auburn standout signed his fully guaranteed rookie deal that is worth north of $23.5 million way ahead of training camp. Brown will count $4.29 million against Carolina’s salary cap in 2020. And this could be a bargain if he hits the ground running.

Others on the defensive tackle list are Zach Kerr ($1.36 million), Woodrow Hamilton (750,000), and sixth-rounder Bravvion Roy ($658,494), who are all looking to make an instant impression on a brand-new coaching staff.
