Carolina Panthers Draft: Xavier Thomas (EDGE) – Clemson (No. 131)

Xavier Thomas might have had a disappointing second season at Clemson. But it would be a big surprise if the defensive lineman didn’t bounce back if there is college football in 2020.

Thomas was a highly coveted recruit coming out of high school. He was a five-star player that was the consensus No. 1 defensive end in the country. The pass-rusher is still a young man who is developing athletically and from a skill perspective. But the player has it all to do for the Tigers in 2020.

His effort on the field is something that might see a quick turnaround in fortunes. Thomas is an eye-catching presence in the run game. And there are times his burst really stands out.

The player will need to refine his pass-rushing moves considerably at the next level. Thomas struggled overall in 2020. But it is easy to forget that he only recently turned 20. So there is still plenty of time for him to further develop.

There is also the concussion which forced him to miss three games to consider. This is normally a red flag for teams. So not having any college football to alleviate these fears is something else that might hurt his draft stock.

That being said, it is far too soon to give up on his potential upside. And getting Thomas at this juncture would be a steal for the Carolina Panthers.
