Carolina Panthers camp: 4 players feature in Week 1 stock-watch
By Dean Jones
UP: Omar Bayless (WR)
The Carolina Panthers wasted little time in trimming their roster down to 80. This saw plenty of undrafted players moved on during the early period of training camp. And it is something that will become prevalent across the league in the coming weeks.
Teams will opt to go with an experienced player rather than take a flyer on someone who has spent no time on an NFL field. But wide receiver Omar Bayless has shown enough for the coaching staff to keep him around, which has seen his stock rise during camp’s first week.

Bayless has plenty of work to do in order to secure a place on the 53-man roster. The Panthers are loaded at the wide receiver spot. And with the top three places on the depth chart cemented, it has left a number of wideouts fighting for other places on the roster.
The fact Bayless is still with the team indicates there are high hopes regarding the former Arkansas State standout. He is coming off one of the most productive seasons anywhere in the college system in 2019. But transitioning that to the next level is a completely different ball game.
Not having a preseason to get valuable targets will no doubt hurt Bayless. Catching the eye during team drills is all well and good. But it takes just one noticeable play in a warm-up game to make a real difference to your fortunes.
Bayless was one of the real winners from the first week of Carolina’s camp. But there is a lot of hard work to come yet.
