Carolina Panthers camp: 4 players feature in Week 1 stock-watch
By Dean Jones
DOWN: Woodrow Hamilton (DT)
The Carolina Panthers added more depth to their defensive tackle room by picking up Bruce Hector off the waiver wire this week. And if the player comes in and makes an instant impression, then it could spell bad news for Woodrow Hamilton.
The lineman is looking to fill one of the primary backup roles behind Kawann Short and No. 7 overall pick Derrick Brown in 2020. Hamilton has been used sparingly throughout his time in the NFL so far. And his chances of getting minutes on the field are diminishing with every passing year.
Hamilton is a space-eating presence at the top of his game. But it is hard to tell just what sort of impact he could make as there isn’t a great deal to go off.
Adding another player such as Hector is further competition for places. This will put additional pressure on Hamilton during team drills. And it remains to be seen whether this is a challenge too far for the former undrafted prospect out of Mississippi.
This is not an easy time for any fringe player. They need to make their presence felt at practice more than ever. And although Hamilton has been down this road before during his fledgling career to date. Putting this experience to good use when it counts is another matter entirely.
