Carolina Panthers camp: 4 players feature in Week 1 stock-watch
By Dean Jones
UP: Jermaine Carter (LB)
The Carolina Panthers lost the services of Christian Miller and Jordan Mack for the upcoming campaign. Both players opted out amid health concerns surrounding COVID-19. And this has enhanced the prospects of Jermaine Carter in 2020.
The player is looking to get a starting opportunity at the outside linebacker spot opposite Shaq Thompson. Miller was set to be arguably his strongest competition for the place. And his decision to sit out the season raises Carter’s stock significantly.
There will still be some players to beat out in order to win a place in the lineup for Carolina’s Week 1 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders. Marquis Haynes is another danger to Carter’s pursuit of getting a more prominent role. And the presence of second-round pick Yetur Gross-Matos filling the role on pass-rushing situations is another intriguing option to consider.
Carter has been more than vocal on social media regarding the lack of organization from the league ahead of the most uncertain campaign in recent memory. But this has the scope to be one of some real potential for the former Maryland star.
What comes next will be entirely up to the player. Carter has all the tools needed to be a starter at the professional level. And although nothing is guaranteed, his chances received a welcome boost with the news of Miller’s opt-out next season.
