Carolina Panthers No. 2: The backup running back situation

There is quite the battle taking place for the No. 2 running back spot behind Christian McCaffrey. There are now four players who could harbor realistic ambitions of slotting into the primary backup role. And this is a situation that is worth keeping a close eye on in the coming weeks.

Who wins this particular battle might see more playing time than expected in 2020. The Carolina Panthers are going to lean on their new face of the franchise heavily. But giving the former first-round pick more than 400 combined touches once again has the potential to do more harm than good.

This could mean that the No. 2 option might get some additional carries in new offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s scheme. And this has only heightened the intensity between those looking to secure the spot.

The Panthers added another possible option in the form of Trenton Cannon, who was picked up off waivers following his release by the New York Jets.

He has the same dual-threat impact of McCaffrey. And there is a player of enormous potential there providing he is free of the injury problems that have hampered his NFL progress so far.

Reggie Bonnafon still appears to be the favorite thanks to an eye-catching contribution in 2019. Mike Davis and Jordan Scarlett also will not go down without a fight. So which way the coaching staff goes with this is going to be telling.
