Carolina Panthers camp: 4 players to bring in for tryouts
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Player No. 2: Luke Stocker – TE
The Carolina Panthers would be prudent to add another reliable pass-catching presence at the tight end position before the season. They put all their eggs in one basket with Ian Thomas this offseason following the departure of Greg Olsen. And although primary backup Chris Manhertz is a force to be reckoned with from a blocking perspective. The player offers very little moving the chains.
Thomas is predicted by many to have a breakout season in Joe Brady’s dynamic scheme. Carolina’s new offensive coordinator utilized tight ends heavy during his historic season masterminded LSU’s passing attack on their way to a National Championship in 2019. And this could mean big things on the former Indiana star’s future.
One player that might be worth bringing in for a tryout is Luke Stocker. The veteran has the versatility that the Panthers’ coaching staff loves. And he is a big body with assured hands that could come in and contribute at the drop of a hat.
Stocker has a career pass catch success rate of 65.5 percent from targets thrown his way. This is despite being a complementary piece on three different teams throughout his career. And he is no stranger to the NFC South having spent seven years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The player is immensely physical. And he is adept at creating separation quickly on short to intermediate routes. Stocker is a useful addition to have in the red zone, which is something else that should not be overlooked.
Stocker did visit the Atlanta Falcons this week. But it remains to be seen whether he will end up with the Panthers’ NFC South rival.
