Carolina Panthers camp: 4 players to bring in for tryouts
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Player No. 4: Dez Bryant – WR
Dez Bryant has been out of the NFL for a long time. And he might be well past the peak of his powers. However, if the once prolific wide receiver is looking for a shot at making a comeback, then the Carolina Panthers is a place where not much would be expected of him.
They have their top-three wideouts cemented in D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson, and Curtis Samuel. Plenty of other talented individuals are also fighting it out for targets during training camp. So even though this might be something that does not immediately jump out as something that could benefit the organization. Bryant is still a low risk, high reward tryout candidate for any NFL team.
Sean Payton thought enough of the player to give him a deal with the New Orleans Saints last season. An Achilles injury ended his chances of seeing the field almost instantly. But if he picked up anything regarding their offense, then it would ensure a smooth transition to the Panthers.
The Saints offensive scheme is similar to that which will be deployed by Joe Brady in 2020. But Bryant has not played since the 2017 season, which brings its own set of complications.
With career stats of 531 receptions, 7,459 receiving yards, 353 first downs, and 73 touchdowns. Bryant has something a little bit different that could be the wildcard that the Panthers are looking for.
It is a big gamble, of that there is no doubt. But seeing what Bryant has to offer during a tryout could be the catalyst behind him making a successful return to the league.
