Carolina Panthers camp: 3 big questions at cornerback
By Dean Jones
What are some of the big questions facing the cornerback unit of the Carolina Panthers ahead of the new season?
The Carolina Panthers have plenty of questions to answer regarding their cornerback options in 2020. This is an area of the field that has undergone significant changes under the new regime. And how they perform in the face of some stern tests next season will go a long way to determining the team’s overall fortunes.
This is something that was to be expected during the first year of such a vast rebuild. The Carolina Panthers suffered their fair share of turmoil throughout the secondary last time out. But there is renewed hope that a younger and more dynamic group can turn things around.
That might be easier said than done following an offseason of incredible disruption. Things take time to get right. And defensive coordinator Phil Snow will only have team drills to get his message across before the Panthers’ Week 1 encounter against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Carolina’s chances of reaching the postseason in new head coach Matt Rhule’s first year appear bleak. Achieving success almost from scratch doesn’t happen overnight. But if the Panthers can show promise and develop as they go along during the campaign. Then it is going to give their long-term aspirations a real boost.
It will be a season full of ups and downs, of that there is little doubt. The Panthers face a daunting task in the NFC South. And they also come up against teams that could be mounting a serious challenge for the Super Bowl if the campaign makes it that far in the current climate.
How this cornerback unit gets on will play a leading role. And here are three big questions surrounding the group heading into 2020.
