Carolina Panthers: 3 reasons Jeremy Chinn could start at OLB
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers Reason No. 1: Speed
One of the key features of Jeremy Chinn’s game is a speed that defies a player his size. He ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash time at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine. And he plays just as fast on the field.
Although his pass-rushing wouldn’t be much of a factor if the Carolina Panthers decided to use Chinn at outside linebacker. His quickness should ensure that the player is around the ball prominently.
Having explosive speed is one thing. But putting this all together at the next level is another matter entirely. Chinn stands at 6-foot-3, so he should have no trouble mixing it at the second level against NFL-caliber players.
It would take some time to adjust to playing outside linebacker. But Chinn has proven extremely versatile during his time at Southern Illinois. This should stand him in good stead if defensive coordinator Phil Snow decides to go in this direction. And is represents an enticing proposition.
There is not much in the way of expectations on the Panthers in 2020. This should give them more leeway to experiment in pursuit of becoming a contender in the not-too-distant future. And having someone with a supreme speed at the second level such as Chinn is something that could further bolster a formidable-looking front seven.
