Carolina Panthers: 3 reasons Jeremy Chinn could start at OLB

Carolina Panthers Reason No. 2: Ability in coverage
Another positive for the Carolina Panthers if they move Jeremy Chinn to outside linebacker is his ability in coverage. This would be a real asset to have in this area of the field. And it is an element of his game where the player thrives.
While Chinn might have some trouble covering receivers on the outside. The player excelled in the slot. He is big enough to go across the middle with tight ends if needed. And he is also quick enough to deal with receivers coming out of the slot.
This is something that others looking to fill the outside linebacker role just do not possess. Jermaine Carter and Marquis Haynes have plenty of strengths. But making an impact in coverage is not one of them.
That might be something else than Chinn could offer in this possible scenario. The Panthers have Juston Burris to put at the safety spot opposite Tre Boston if they wish. And this would allow their second-rounder to make a difference all over the field.
Rookies operating in defensive back positions do tend to go through their fair share up struggles in their first year. Playing safety or cornerback is unforgiving for young players looking to forge a successful career in the NFL. And allowing Chinn to operate with a group filled with experience should increase his chances of making an immediate impression.
