Carolina Panthers Battle No. 3: QB 2

There is a key individual battle going on for the No. 2 quarterback position behind Teddy Bridgewater. Will Grier and P.J. Walker are both vying for the role. And it remains to be seen who will be the primary backup for the Carolina Panthers in 2020.

To say Grier endured struggles during his rookie season would be something of an understatement. The former West Virginia star was clearly not ready to see the field. And he became a victim of circumstance with no other viable alternatives in Carolina.

Playing behind a threadbare offensive line that underperformed significantly was not ideal. And there is just no telling just what sort of hit this has had on Grier’s confidence.

The signal-caller will be given all he can handle by Walker, who arrives with the organization riding on the crest of a wave. He enjoyed a phenomenal time in the XFL that saw the player emerge as a potential MVP candidate. And this earned him a two-year deal with the Panthers this offseason.

Walker has a previous relationship with Matt Rhule from their time together in college. He also has a dual-threat presence that was seen prevalently in years gone by with Cam Newton under center. And this is another intriguing element regarding what he can bring to the franchise.

Both players should make the 53-man roster unless the Panthers decide to go with just two quarterbacks. This battle might come down to momentum. And one player has a significant edge in that regard.

Prediction: P.J. Walker (QB 2)
