David Reese – LB

The fact that David Reese is still on the roster indicates that the linebacker has made a good impression during his time with the Carolina Panthers so far. But his situation is still a precarious one in terms of making the 53-man roster.

Reese failed to hear his name called in the 2020 NFL Draft despite a strong college career with the Florida Gators. He was quickly picked up by the Carolina Panthers. And while some undrafted free agents have since been moved on. The player has apparently done enough to earn a longer period to potentially catch the eye.

This will give the player plenty of confidence as team drills increase in tempo between now and when the final roster cuts are made. Reese’s prolific stint in the college system ended with 324 combined tackles, 122 solo tackles, 3.5 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss, and one interception. And this is further evidence of the sound instincts he brings to the table on almost every down.

The Panthers are looking to develop a prospect at linebacker who could eventually fill the void left by Luke Kuechly long-term. Reese could fall into this category if he continues to show growth and a willingness to learn. But this is arguably the worst time for an undrafted player to be trying to forge a career in a professional environment.

Reese could be classed as under threat if Carolina decides to make more roster adjustments before their Week 1 opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. And it will be up to the player to convince the coaching staff that he is a chance worth taking.
