3 ambitious goals for Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey in 2020
By Dean Jones
Career-high yards-per-carry average
One area where Christian McCaffrey’s stats downgraded somewhat in 2019 was yards-per-carry. This was to be expected with so many touches. But it is an area that could see a marked improvement with a more diverse offense next season.
The ball should be spread around far more than at any stage during the previous campaign. Maximizing McCaffrey’s impact whilst keeping him fresh is going to be a complexity that the Carolina Panthers need to figure out in 2020. And getting others involved more prominently is bound to give the player more room to do damage.
McCaffrey’s yards-per-carry average was still a respectable 4.8 last season. Considering this came from 287 carries, it was hardly an area of concern for the organization.
His career-high percentage of 5.0 came in 2018 from 219 rushes. Besting this next season is a realistic goal that McCaffrey can target. And if Carolina’s offensive line can hold up its end of the bargain, it is only going to enhance the back’s prospects.
Little is expected of the Panthers in terms of a postseason berth in 2020. But the same does not apply to McCaffrey.
He will be the driving force for this team for as long as he is still performing at a high level. And another outstanding campaign is a distinct possibility for a player with the world at his feet.
